Two Arrested in Mount Arlington for Drugs & Handgun Charges

On October 13, 2021, members of the Narcotics Task Force and the Mt. Arlington Police Department conducted an operation that resulted in the arrests of Goodgame and Canfield. The operation resulted in the seizure of a .45 caliber handgun loaded with hollow point ammunition, fentanyl pills, and approximately $10,000 US Currency, within Mt. Arlington Borough.

Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Chief of Detectives Christoph Kimker, Sheriff James M. Gannon, and Mt. Arlington Police Department Chief Edward LaBruno announce the arrests of Maurice A. Goodgame, AKA “Tony,” and Matthew Canfield by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Special Enforcement Unit / Narcotics Task Force and the Mt. Arlington Police Department.

Goodgame, age 26, of Landing (Mt. Arlington), NJ, was charged with the following crimes on warrant complaints and lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing:

  • Possession of a controlled dangerous substance (fentanyl), in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a(1), a crime of the third degree.
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (fentanyl), in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5a(1) and 5b(5), a crime of the third degree.
  • Unlawful possession of handgun, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), a crime of the second degree.
  • Possession of a firearm (handgun) while committing a controlled dangerous substance offense, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4.1a, a crime of the second degree.
  • Possession of hollow point bullets, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3j, a crime of the fourth degree.
  • Distribution of a controlled dangerous substance (fentanyl), in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5a(1)b(5), a crime of the third degree.
  • Money laundering, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-25a, a crime of the third degree.
  • Certain person not to possess weapons, in violation of 2C:39-7b(1), a crime of the second degree.

The State has filed a detention motion with the Court based on the above charges and the fact that Goodgame was enrolled in the Drug Court program at the time of his arrest, a violation of his participation.

Matthew Canfield, age 18, of Mt. Arlington, NJ, was charged on a complaint summons with:

  • Possession of a controlled dangerous substance (fentanyl), in violation of 2C:35-10a(1), a crime of the third degree.

This investigation was conducted by the Morris County Narcotics Task Force, including Morris County Sheriff’s Officer Sergeant Edward Zienowicz, who is assigned to the task force. 

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation.  Despite these accusations, the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they have each been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
