ROXBURY, NJ (February 28, 2020) – Roxbury High School’s new Structural Design and Fabrication program continues to support the community.

The course that covers a wide variety of topics including construction, carpentry, architecture, and design allows students to put their knowledge and skills to work here at home in Roxbury and last Saturday members of the SDF program and RHS took part in Morris Habitat for Humanity’s Hearts and Hammers Gala at the Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph. This is Morris Habitat’s largest annual fundraiser with over 500 people in attendance this year, the most yet.

This year’s event celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Morris Habitat for Humanity and the work they have done to build affordable housing in the greater Morris County community.

Roxbury’s SDF program worked with the Habitat staff and volunteers to design and build two items for the event. The first was a photo booth that showed the layers of a house being built at various stages of the building process. Showing studs, sheathing, foam insulation, and vinyl siding.

SDF Teacher Frank Caccavale shared, “This was very popular during the event with guests taking many photos inside the photo booth!”

The other project was a model home the students built that was featured on the center of the stage next to the speakers throughout the evening.

“Students worked to give the home a high level of detail, complete with lines where siding would be, a porch, a garage, and even a small doorknob. Roofing shingles manufactured by GAF were used to showcase GAF, one of the largest and most loyal sponsors of Morris Habitat for Humanity.”

This event wasn’t the first with Habitat for the newly formed program. Earlier this school year, SDF students worked on the homes being built at 121 Main Street in Succasunna and have plans to go back four more times between now and the end of the school year.

“This has been a terrific way for students to utilize the hands-on skills they have been learning in our class to make a positive impact on their local community. Many of the students pass the homes being built on Main Street every day and will always know they had a hand in helping to make that project (the largest to date for Morris Habitat) possible,” said Caccavale.

Earlier this month, SDF students spent a day in the SDF lab for an in-house field trip to work on these projects all day. They were joined by volunteers and staff at Morris Habitat and worked together to make this project a reality.

“It is my hope to continue to work with Morris Habitat in the coming years to find even more ways to help them serve our local communities,” said Caccavale.
