The following is the weekly report for fishing for Lake Hopatcong as provided by Dows Boat & Bait Shop and Aaron Graybill from Lake Hopatcong Guide Service.

With some cooler weather and less boat traffic the fishing around the lake is peaking for the fall.

  • We are seeing nice walleye in the 3 to 5 pound range, caught while jigging and also on bait.

  • There are still hybrid stripers being seen, caught off any of the points on Rapala ice jigs, or herring.

  • Lots of white and yellow perch, along with some crappie and we have seen some pickerel in the last few days.

  • Jim Welsh weighed in with two nice channel cats in the 4 to 5 pound range caught on herring.

The State will be having their second free fishing day of the year on October 23rd where no license is required.  It’s the perfect time to try fishing to see if it’s something you like.

NJ Free Fishing Day:

The June Free Fishing Day is held in conjunction with National Fishing and Boating Week; the October date allows the public to take advantage of the fall trout stocking. Remember: on these days residents may fish on the Garden State’s public waters without a license or trout stamp. All other regulations, including size and daily catch limits, remain in effect.

New Jersey’s two Free Fishing Days are a no-risk investment for an introduction to freshwater fishing in the Garden State and the perfect time for families to enjoy two days of outdoor fun for free. Though youngsters under the age of 16 don’t need a license, these days provide a special benefit to adults who can join in the fun without having to purchase a license. That is, until they get hooked on a sport that just might become a lifetime of fun for the whole family.
