The Mount Arlington 4th Annual Youth Sand Castle Building Contest became a serious contest as the residents age 5 – 14 took to the sand.
On Thursday August 4th, 2016 the Mount Arlington 4th Annual Youth Sand Castle Building Contest got underway, and it became immediately clear that this is something the kids take very seriously and plan from the start to win. Once the teams were formed into the following age categories, the action got underway.
Sharks ages 12-14
Dolphin’s ages 8-11,
Sunnies ages 7 and under
Age didn’t seem to matter, as the different teams started on their elaborate creations of sand, water and weeds. These creations where not just simple sand castles, but rather entire villages and towns fashioned after Pompeii or Atlantis, with functioning moats, falling ash and armies attacking the cities.

After a brief hour the judging crew got underway to evaluate the creatives designs. To help with the judging Mount Arlington Police was even involved to make sure the judging was fair, and to ensure that the results didn’t create any riots from the highly competitive kids participating.
During the judging session, each team was able to convey what their creation represented, and to witness the moats in full action, as their provided protection against possible invading armies.
During the final awards ceremony session, it seemed that all teams were happy with their placement and final awards. With many of the contestants stating “they would return next year!”
