In February that Mount Arlington Borough Council passed a resolution which will officially rename our beach The Arthur J. Ondish Memorial Beach.

The Borough is planning a dedication on Memorial Day or the July 4 Holiday. The borough beach fronts Lake Hopatcong; one of the late mayor’s joys. He served for a long time as chairman of the Lake Hopatcong Commission.

In addition, the “Arthur R. Ondish Memorial Scholarship,” has been devised by the Morris County League of Municipalities.

The award, in an as-of-yet undetermined amount, will be awarded to students in the K-8 Mount Arlington district who “emulate Art’s community service.”

Donations for the scholarship are currently being accepted.

Rare Cancer

Ondish died after a long fight against a rare glandular cancer on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. Hundreds attended his memorial service at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home in Landing last year. Ondish had been in and out of Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City for nearly two years, undergoing treatment for the rare cancer.
