This first annual Health & Safety event organized by Josh Hryman a senior at Roxbury High School, was an enormous success, as the public learned about what’s behind the scenes for many First Responders.
Each of the following departments supported this effort by having both vehicles and personnel on-site that could outline, what they do, how they do it, and to offers tips for preventing the problems that they normally deal with.
Local First Responders Attending:
- Fire Trucks from Flanders & Roxbury
- Ambulances from Flanders & Roxbury (Complimentary Blood Pressure screening)
- Police Detectives (Drug Awareness)
- Car seat safety checks
- Roxbury EMT
- St Claire’s Paramedics
- Atlantic Air One helicopter will also be on-site
- Shoprite Healthy Eating
The fair offered lessons in CPR and how to use a defibrillator if necessary. The lessons walked you through the difference between a heart attack, stroke, and a coronary arrest. Based upon that identification they provided step-by-step instructions on what to do, and the use of the defibrillator.
The multiple local Fire Departments showed off the gear that they take into the field each day to make sure they not only respond to the fire but more importantly save lives whenever necessary.
The Police Detectives that outlined drug abuse and how to identify the signs was swamped by parents, who wanted to better understand the signs, with many of them trading stories that they have been through with their kids. The tips the detectives provided to the parents were factual and based upon past history, which really helps drive home the message.
Overall, this first annual event needs to be repeated to make sure that everyone gains the learning experience offered at this first annual event.
