ROXBURY, NJ (January 11, 2019) – As a Google Reference District, Roxbury Township Public Schools was afforded a pilot opportunity from Google to have students 13 years and older pilot a G-Suite Certification for Students.
Before winter break, a dozen Roxbury students at Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School earned that certification. They were eighth graders Emilia Stumpo, Camila Gil, Sean Feeney, James Winters, Luke Scaraggi, freshman Eric Folsom, juniors Adam Reingold, William Fulton, Ammar Alam, and seniors Robert Rust, Caitlin Menor and Courtney Graf.
Roxbury offered this G-Suite Certification program to a limited number of students in November and December. The certification program normally costs $37.50, but the fee was waived for those interested in participating this year. This certification is designed to measure a student’s ability to work, communicate, and collaborate in real-time using G-Suite.
Why should students be certified?
As the workplace becomes increasingly digital, collaborating effectively using real-time productivity tools is becoming a prerequisite skill. A Google Cloud certification in G Suite signals to employers a person’s readiness to operate in today's modern work environment. By earning the G Suite certification, individuals prove their ability to use cloud-based tools to create and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and files. Students demonstrate that they can communicate effectively with email and online meeting solutions.
This voluntary program examined and verified the proficiency of key features of the G-Suite platform which included Drive, Gmail, Hangouts Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Ruth Davis and Teresa Rehman from Roxbury’s Technology Department created a G-Suite for Students game to help them prepare.
“We reviewed the exam guide and Ruth added in the hands-on activities that Google shared so students could earn a badge in Roxbury EDGE as well,” shared Rehman.
EDGE is Roxbury’s self-directed, online personalized learning program developed uniquely for Roxbury teachers and students. EDGE supports self-paced course games for teachers focused on Tech Tools, G-Suite and Pedagogy and Media Literacy and Career Pathway for students. Individuals can complete activities within minutes and progress through the game as they level up and earn points.
