In honor of Earth Day last Sunday, two Roxbury Schools celebrated the day through sustainable programs.

The Eisenhower Middle School Builders Club with the assistance of club advisors, Elizabeth Tucker and Marie Pessolano celebrated the day by cleaning up Eyland Avenue. This club is the middle school version of Kiwanis, Key Club, K-Kids which meets every two weeks after school and does community service projects.

At the elementary level, Franklin School did their annual earth day poster contest based on the Earth Day Network theme. This year’s theme is to stop plastic pollution and the marine animals.

In addition to the poster contest, the Franklin School PTA decided to hold a plastic bag collection challenge. PTA member, Gabriella Pereira came in to show videos to the students during lunchtime on the 20th with information on how bad plastic bags are for the land and the water.

“This is where I got the idea to make a competition and drop it off to ShopRite who recycles the bags. If you make it fun, the kids learn more.”

Pereira also teamed with Madeleine Tarleton the school’s Math Supplementary Instruction teacher to turn the counting process into a math lesson. Students practiced their math skills by helping Pereira count the bags collected.

The class with the largest collection would earn a Class Choice Day where they could choose to wear PJs, crazy hats, crazy socks, etc. for the day.

Within a week, the students collected 2,202 plastic bags to be recycled. “We had five huge black garbage bags filled.”

Principal Lisa Ferrare announced Marla Sarrel’s second-grade class as the winner of the plastic bag competition with 414 bags. They will now get to choose their Class Choice Day.

Pereira announced via the school’s Facebook page Monday morning the winners of the Earth Day poster contest, which included one from each grade. The winners were Aubree Mastrian (Gr K), Almir Rashad (Gr 1), Ella Van Iderstine (Gr 2), Frank Seretis (Gr 3), and Vivien Pereira (Gr 4). Winners each reached a book, reusable bag, Franklin pencil, and band. All other participants received a certificate and reusable water bottle.

Even though Earth Day 2018 has come and gone, Franklin School will be continuing their recycling and sustainable efforts with an Every Drop Counts program.

A flyer and stickers will be sent home to each family in the school to remind them to turn off the faucets. This water-activated sticker adheres to the faucet stopper. When it comes in contact with water, it will reveal the message “turn off the faucet”.

The Every Drop Counts campaign is brought to the school through the TerraCycle program. TerraCycle and Colgate are teaming up to spread the world and inspire 10 million youth nationwide to save water.

The efforts of these schools are all a part of the Roxbury School District’s commitment to becoming more sustainable and green in its policies, practices, and education.

The Roxbury Township Public Schools made this commitment back in 2016 when the Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving a half of dozen different policies outlining its position and efforts. To that end, the district is continuously working toward becoming a Sustainable Jersey for Schools certified district and to have each of our seven schools become certified as well.

Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time. Launched in fall 2014, they are a non-profit organization that provides tools, training, and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs.
