The Roxbury High School Debate Team hosted the 2018 Northwest Debate League Championships on February 23rd at Roxbury High School as the 2017 defending champions and a league record was broken.
Senior James Morley won Best Speaker of the Year for a third year in a row, which has never been done in the history of the league.
Seniors Anavil Patel and Storm Moeller sealed Roxbury’s domination of the individual speaker competition as Roxbury took three of the five best speaker awards for the entire 2017/2018 season.
At the championship, competitors argued the national resolution: The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States. The Roxbury Affirmative team was placed second for the entire season.
Both the Affirmative and Negative teams took the equivalent of a bronze medal placing third overall for the day as their classmates, parents, and teachers cheered them to victory.
“Looking ahead, junior Chris Lange is ready to take the helm as Debate Captain for the 2018/2019 season with recruiting new talent to expand the program as his number one goal. Go Gaels,” shared Lisa Heddy, Debate Team advisor.
