Roxbury High School’s Winter Track and Field athletes held their kick-off dinner on December 13th and in the spirit of the season, its Booster Club decided that the team should encourage its athletes to give back to the community that supports them.
Families coming to the kick-off dinner were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Roxbury Social Services, an organization in town that provides Roxbury Township residents with necessary services and information based on individual needs and handling emergency situations in our community. The food pantry exists solely on the generous donations from individuals and local businesses. Many individuals and families in the Township rely on social services and the food pantry.
Coaches Laura Schmidt and Derek Bischoff encouraged their student-athletes to participate by reminding them during practices and via their Google Classroom page.
Schmidt shared, “One of the most important lessons to learn when you are on any team is that you are always part of something bigger than yourself. Whether that is your team, your family, your community, etc. you are always part of a larger group that depends on each other. For our athletes, it’s important for that idea to transcend what we do as just a track and field team. At some point, being a competitive athlete will end, but we hope that our athletes carry on these broader life lessons.”
The team, made up for 27 girls and 40 boys responded, collecting enough items to fill a shopping cart. Members of the team delivered their collected items to Roxbury Social Services on Friday, December 29th, over winter break.
The RHS Track and Field team is on the brink of their championship season with numerous upcoming relays on the schedule. Upcoming meets are:
- January 21: Group 3 State Relay Championship

- February 3: State Sectional Championship
- February 16: Group 3 State Championship
- February 24-25: NJ State Meet of Champions

Coach Schmidt is hopeful they’ll have a few athletes qualify for this year’s New Balance Indoor National Championships!
