Students in Roxbury High School’s Fashion Design class created special items in December for Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Hospital.

Fourteen students in Ruth Falvey’s year-long class completed two sewing projects. The first was making 38 fleece hats and the other was making 13 children’s pillowcases that were packaged and donated to the hospital.

These first-year students were introduced to these projects as part of the sewing machine and hand-sewing unit in this five-credit course offered at Roxbury High School. “Most of the students had very little skills in sewing. They were taught basic hand sewing techniques and how to operate a sewing machine. The students learned to use the sewing machine to piece together material along with some techniques, such as a French seam to finish off the seam,” shared Falvey.

Each project took two to three days to complete.

Falvey added, “The students were thrilled about doing the project and are looking forward to another project next semester. We will be working on another donation project for the children in the child development class. This time the students will come up with the project to make for them. They are excited and are learning a valuable skill in the process.”

This class serves as a guide for anyone interested in the world of fashion according to Roxbury High School’s program of studies description. “Students learn about clothing design and selection, textiles, being a smart consumer, personal color analysis, line and design in clothing and fashion careers. The students will also explore the history of fashion and some of fashions’ leading designers. The class will have hands-on experience sewing by hand and by machine to repair, alter, and create new projects. This course also ties in fashion drawing where students illustrate design both by hand and on the computer aided design software used in the fashion industry.”

Falvey shared, “The students will be working on sketches using elements and principles of design. The students enjoy coming to class and are excited about the projects and the content of the program.”

Adding, “I have a great group of students who are caring and giving of their newfound talent to hopefully provide some comfort to the children that are ill. The students attached words of encouragement to the hats before we sent them off before Christmas. True spirit of giving was evident by all. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Roxbury High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences program that includes food preparation, child-care, fashion design and personal finance contribute to district’s overall goal – the growth and development of a self-reliant, productive member of society.
