Roxbury Township is getting cleaned up one road at a time. Righter Road in Succasunna was the latest area tackled. The Roxbury High School robotics team, Roxbotix, participated in their semi-annual Adopt-a-Road cleanup through the Roxbury Department of Public Works in conjunction with Roxbury Clean Communities on November 20th.

Roxbury’s Clean Communities offer individuals, school groups, churches, or businesses a fun way to be a part of their community with Adopt-a-Road and Adopt-a-Spot projects.

The Adopt-a-Road program that Roxbotix took part in is a pledge to adopt a public roadway in Roxbury Township and make at least two cleanups each year.

The Roxbury DPW and Clean Communities supply participants with gloves, bags, vests, and Litter Patrol signs as needed.

The robotics team has participated in this program for the last few years. As a bonus incentive to be a part of the program, Clean Communities offers mini-grants to non-profit groups on a first come, first serve basis as well as other means of acknowledgment, such as a posted sign in the designated spot, write-ups with photo, and certificates celebrating the individuals, groups or businesses.

Roxbury Roxbotix is currently the only group within Roxbury Schools participating in this program. However, Kellie Ann Keyes from Roxbury Clean Communities assures us that there are plenty of opportunities available for more school groups and organizations to participate.

The Roxbury Township Board of Education has been working towards being a Sustainable Jersey for Schools district beginning in 2016 when the Board decided to pursue this distinction. The Board of Education officially approved district policies on sustainability and green initiatives in June 2017. Those policies can be viewed at www.roxbury.org/BOEPolicies.

Each district school also has the ability to become certified through Sustainable Jersey for Schools and is working on earning that achievement.
