Two Roxbury High School seniors will be joining the Rutgers’ Scarlet Knights next fall. A letter of intent/college commitment ceremony was held Wednesday morning for two athletic scholars, Andrew “Andy” Axelson and Matthew “Matt” Dancsecs. Axelson will continue his baseball career with the Scarlet Knights while Dancsecs takes the lacrosse field.

Both young men reflected on the friends they made along the way while playing as a Gael.

Roxbury BaseballAxelson shared, “Playing baseball at Roxbury the past three years has been an experience that I will cherish forever. Being able to play alongside my great friends, loving family and knowledgeable coaches made it fly by in an instant.”

“I have enjoyed playing a competitive schedule with a team that is made up of so many of my best friends. They are like my brothers and I am looking forward to our senior year and working to continuing our success of last season,” added Dancsecs.

Their coaches commented on the work ethic and dedication these men have shown while playing for Roxbury.

Greg Trotter, head baseball coach, explained how Andy always approached things with a positive attitude. “When he is on a baseball field or around any type of baseball activity, Andy’s love for the game is evident. He is a tireless worker and someone who has earned the respect of his teammates, coaches, opposing players, and opposing coaches. Andy continues to improve each season. I am looking forward to seeing Andy play his senior season here at Roxbury and continue his playing career at Rutgers. He is a special young man.”

RoxburyLacrosse head coach, Chris Blough’s sentiments echoed that of Trotter’s when talking about Matt as a player. “Matt is one of the best student-athletes I’ve ever coached. He embodies everything we as coaches want to see in players that represent Roxbury lacrosse. His grades are excellent, he’s coachable, he works hard on and off the field, and he’s never in trouble. On top of that, he’s extremely talented. Matt is one of the best lacrosse players we’ve ever had here. Rutgers is getting a tremendous student-athlete that will do nothing but work hard to help them to continued success in the future.”

These student - athletes thanked their coaches for the tutelage provided while players.

“I would like to thank Coach Blough for his dedication to the Roxbury Lacrosse team and for all he did to turn the program into what it is today,” shared Dancsecs.

Axelson went on to say, “I will forever be thankful for the lessons my coaches taught me throughout high school, on and off the field. I am looking forward to attending Rutgers next year with the same attitude and determination I have developed from Roxbury Baseball.”
