On a sunny, brisk fall morning, the students and staff of Franklin Elementary School honored our nation’s veteran’s in a special flag raising ceremony and presentation in front of the school. Many of the dozen or more honored veterans had a direct connection to a student in the school.
More than 50 Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts from Girl Scout Troops 96603, 97252, 96786, 6638, and Cub Pack 54 presented and helped raise the flag with the help of Larry Bliss, the Aramark custodian, on Wednesday morning in the presence of parents and special honored guests.
Seventeen students from Kindergarten through Fourth Grade shared different readings in honor of Veteran’s Day.
Throughout the half-hour presentation, all in attendance participated in the flag salute and the singing of the National Anthem and God Bless America under the direction of Marie Wallace, vocal music teacher and Maria Gallagher, fourth-grade teacher and Rose Abbey, art teacher.
Students were invited up to join their special Veteran as they were asked to introduce themselves along with their names, branches of service, and their time in the service.
The program wrapped up a moment of silence and Ryan Sweer, instrumental music teacher at Roxbury High School playing Taps. As students were dismissed back to their classes, many of them thanked the veterans for their service.
