Jefferson Elementary School and the Early Act Club saw and heard about the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by recent Hurricane Maria and they wanted to help! Third and fourth grade Early Act students decided in one of their meetings to create posters to raise awareness for needed supplies.

In a school-wide and community effort, bedding, cleaning supplies, baby wipes and diapers, miscellaneous household items were collected during the week of October 9th.

The collected supplies filled the back of a pickup truck and were brought over to the Township of Dover. Dover Township coordinated with Governor Christie’s Office to ship the supplies to Puerto Rico.

Principal Melissa Cosgrove shared a picture on the school’s Facebook page with the following message, “A few members from Early Act are getting ready to box donations for Puerto Rico. Thank you to all those that donated and thank you to all those that jumped in to help us box up the items! Also, a huge thank you to Mrs. Shannon for allowing us to load up her truck so she could transport the items for us! Great job, everyone! Super teamwork.”

Jefferson’s Early Act Club is a school-wide service club for the elementary students and is sponsored by the Roxbury Rotary Club.

Early Acts website states, “The mission and operation of Early Act are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into the Interact Club at the high school.”

The site goes on to say, “Early Act provides young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others. It also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local, and global communities.”
