Warning: Lake Hopatcong Ice Conditions are Becoming Dangerous

Here are the current conditions, according to Dow’s Boat Rentals on Lake Hopatcong.

  • The coves still have about 10” of ice covering most of the area.
  • Further out from the coves the thickness of the ice drops rapidly to just 5”, which is starting into the dangerous stage
  • Further out into the lake, the main lake is open with no ice.

Based upon the weather forecast the existing ice listed above will not be able to maintain their current thickness, so caution should be taken on entering the ice anytime after Monday, February 4, 2019.

Hopatcong Lake Knee Deep Club will hold the second 2019 Ice Fishing contest

The Hopatcong Lake Knee Deep Club will hold the second 2019 Ice Fishing contest on Sunday February 10, 2019. And they hope that cold weather returns for the contest.

The Lake Hopatcong contest will begin at 6 AM and conclude at 4PM.The contest entry fee is $20.00 for club members and $25.00 ($20.00 fee plus $5.00 non-member fee).

Cash prizes will be based on an 80% pay out of entry fees for each of these three categories: Perch/Crappie, Pickerel and all other species (excluding Muskies).

Top finishers will be based on weight and any ties will be broken by which fish was entered first.

Please read the entry form for complete rules, entry forms are available on line at, www.kneedeepclub.org, or at the Clubs’ official weigh stations located at: Dow’s Boat Rental, Nolan’s Point, Lake Hopatcong, and Lake’s End Marina, Mount Arlington Blvd, Landing.

Mail in entries must be received by Friday, February 8, 2019, in person entries can be made up until 8AM the morning of the contest. In the event the contest is postponed due to unsafe ice conditions, a notice will be posted. For additional information call 973-663-3826.

Take a kid fishing: A contestant may enter a child who is under the age of 16 in this contest for a $5 entry fee. The child with the heaviest fish in each category will win a jigging rod and reel.

The Lake Hopatcong Knee Deep Club is wishing for a real cold period so we can have safe ice for the contest. The very best of fishing luck, see you on the Ice!

FYI - There is a third Ice fishing contest scheduled for March 3, 2019.
