On 10/31/2019 at 2:10pm, Jefferson Twp. Police Officers responded to the area of Route 15 North and Weldon Rd (6.9 mile marker) for a report of an overturned dump truck. Upon initial arrival, the driver of the vehicle was trapped inside the vehicle.

Officers were able to extricate the driver from the vehicle, later identified as Gilberto Salazar, 70 of Ledgewood, NJ. No other occupants were inside the overturned truck. Mr. Salazar was transported to St. Clares Hospital, Dover where he was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. According to wittnesses, the speed of the dump truck and wet roads may have played a factor. The Jefferson Twp. Police Department was assisted by the Morris County Prosecutors Office and Morris County Sheriff’s Dept. in the processing and investigation of the crash.

The right lane of Rt. 15 North and exit to Weldon Rd were closed for several hours after the crash, due to fuel on the roadway. Morris County HAZMAT, JTFD CO #2, JT Rescue Squad, Picatinny Arsenal FD and NJ Dept. of Transportation, also assisted at the scene with the crash and cleanup.
