The Jefferson Arts Committee’s Memorial Scholarships were presented on June 8 by JAC President Carol Punturieri to Matthew Schlomann and Rachel Dorrothy at the 2017 Jefferson Township High School’s Senior Awards Night ceremony.

The Jefferson Arts Committee’s Scholarship Committee chaired by Rose Jackameit, reviewed numerous applications and chose the recipients based on their intentions to attend either a 2 or 4 year college or university with an art related major, their involvement in school and/or community related activities, their ability to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and some need for financial assistance. Both recipients not only met all these requirements but exceeded them.

Matthew was the winner of the JAC’s $1,000 award.  He plans to attend The College of NJ majoring in Music with the goal of becoming a music teacher.  On the Honor Roll all of his four years in the high school, Matthew attained High Honor Roll for the past three years.  He is a member of the National Honor Society and was Guitarist of the Month at the Mayor Performing Arts Center.

This year, the JAC added a scholarship award to a student attending a 2 year community college.  However, with no applications submitted, the decision was made to allot the $500 award to a student placing a very close second to the first recipient.  That individual was Rachel Dorrothy who plans to attend the School of Visual Arts majoring in Video and Photography with the goal of becoming either a Director or Photographer/Videographer.  Rachel has been on the Honor Roll and involved with school productions, plays, sports, and other events both on the stage and/or video crew.

The Jefferson Arts Committee is a non-profit organization in Jefferson Township and sponsors Jefferson Fest (formerly Jefferson Township Day), the Student Artists of the Month program, Christmas in the Village, the Jefferson Township Community Concert and Jazz Bands, the Jefferson Township Community Chorus, the Jefferson Community Players, free Summer Gazebo Concerts, bus trips to Broadway shows and other venues, the Designer Handbag Bingo and Tricky Tray, and other events during the year.  Visit the JAC website at www.jeffersonarts.org, find Jefferson Arts Committee on Facebook, or email artscommittee@jeffersonarts.org
