Jefferson Township – Set to Gain New Farmers Market in 2017

The team of Vicki Burke and Tom Galfo are on a mission to launch Jefferson Township Farmers Market, LLC that promotes local businesses, while bringing the residents the freshest most wholesome products possible.

This hardworking team has already completed all the necessary approvals with the Township and is in the process of selecting the best possible vendors for the Farmers Market official launch on June 4th, 2017.

Background:

Vicki BurkeIt all started last winter when Mitchell Morrison the founder of Sparta’s Farmers Market asked Vicki Burke the simple question, “Why doesn’t Jefferson Township have its own Farmers Market?”

That simple question led Vicki Burke on her quest to start a Farmers Market for Jefferson Township. Her first action was to test the idea through the Jefferson Township Mom’s and Dad’s Facebook page, where she received overwhelmingly positive responces from the community.

Encouraged by the level of enthusiasm, Vicki quickly teamed up with Tom Galfo from the Feisty Pepper Garden Market and Galfo Farms & Saw Mill. Tom who is a third generation farmer, understands what it takes to become successful in this area, and clearly shares the vision with Vicki as to the overall mission of the Jefferson Township Farmers Market.

"The Jefferson Township Administration is behind this 100%" stated Tom, “They had been approached multiple times in the past, but lacked the resources necessary to get everything done until now.”

“We put together a very detailed plan and presented it to the Town Council, and they could tell we were serious about making this happen.”  Added Vicki

Steps the team went through to bring a Farmers Market to Jefferson Township:

  • Develop a working committee
  • Receive Township Approval to use the Municipal Grounds
  • Gain Local Board of Health Approvals
  • Get Fire Marshal Approvals
  • Ensure Local Zoning Coordinator Approvals
  • Ensure you have Traffic Safety Officer Approvals
  • Obtain the Proper Permits
  • And ensure you are meeting NJ State Guidelines

As this long list of approvals and permits are now complete, the team is moving forward with final phase of selecting local businesses to be part of the Farmer’s Market. “We are selecting only one or two vendors from each category, to make sure that it’s profitable for the businesses that participate,” Tom stated.

Both Vicki and Tom were very clear about the mission of the Farmer’s market. “This is all about promoting local businesses and to bring the freshest most wholesome products possible to our residents. We’re going to start small and add as necessary.”

“This summer, we are also working on plans to have special activities for the Kids, we'll also have Local artists providing background music and many other very special events, which everyone can follow on our Facebook page.” Shared Vicki and Tom.

The three Market Managers who will be onsite to assist both the vendors and the public are:

  1. Vicki Burke
  2. Tom Galfo from the Feisty Pepper Garden Market, Galfo Farms & Saw Mill
  3. Bob Ricadela from Sparta Mountain Farms
