Art teachers from the Joe Kubert Art School presented a workshop for STEAM Academy and Honors Art students on Thursday, February 16.

The world renowned Joe Kubert Art School in Dover, New Jersey was founded by comic book artist Joe Kubert who worked for DC comics.   The school is a three-year technical school studying cartooning and commercial art.  Many current and former comic book artists are graduates of the prestigious school.   Only one hundred fifty students are enrolled at any time, making the acceptance process very selective and competitive.

Kubert Art ClassAfter an introductory video about the school and careers in commercial art, the presenters shared real life experiences and discussed new developments in visual art design technology.

The students then engaged in the hands-on problem-based assignment, creating a "panel story" in a "grid" style with very specific detailed criteria.  The artists taught the students about the art of visual storytelling, incorporating skills and knowledge in language arts, anatomy, visual art and math while encouraging the students to express their ideas and emotions through the story.

Students raved to STEAM Academy Directors Kurt Zimmermann and Jon Rischaway how much fun they had engaged in a difficult project of storytelling with confines, and have a whole new respect for a medium they have enjoyed for so long!
