As reported by Councilmember John Young during the Borough of Hopatcong Council meeting on October 22, 2020, the Hopatcong Municipal Alliance has been approached by a National Group called Generation SOS.

The discussion reportedly centered around Hopatcong being the first Generation SOS Chapter in New Jersey, which already has locations in NYC, LA, and Miami. The talks were extensive, and we should learn more information in the near future.

Who is Generation SOS:

The full name is Generation Sharing our Stories (SOS), which is a movement to help empower youth to make informed choices about substance use and addiction prevention.

History:

Gen SOS FlyerAfter a series of overdoses in New York City, a group of teens and young adults came together to share their stories and let others know they are not alone. These courageous “kids” help educate others about the risks of substance use, encouraging them to make informed choices. Generation S.O.S. now has multiple chapters in NYC,  Miami, and Los Angeles and will soon launch in other cities across the county.

Generation S.O.S. is made up of teens, young adults, and a core support team who have witnessed how substance misuse is destroying a generation of youth. Our goal is to empower a movement of youth who will support each other to navigate and facilitate solutions for this epidemic and to ultimately transform how America views and responds to this health crisis.

Their mission’s “Youth empowering youth to make informed choices about substance use.” With the vision of “Overcoming the stigma that prevents America from tackling this health crisis head-on.”

Empowering Youth - For Youth, By Youth

Generation S.O.S. is unique in that it serves, and is led by teens and young adults. This is not a coincidence: Addiction is an adolescent onset illness that is best confronted through early prevention efforts.

A highly diverse Youth Advisory Board, with representation from across the country, works closely with the Core Support Team to help fulfill the organization’s mission.

Members of our Youth Advisory Board are involved in an extraordinary range of projects, including leading in-school education programs, producing community events, creating social media content...and building this website.

What they are Fighting:

The stakes have never been higher for high school and college students exposed to substances, many for the first time.  Kids are more at risk than ever due to isolation and lack of structure. Substance misuse, depression, overdose, and suicide are skyrocketing while most kids are forced to shelter in place without friends, colleagues, and classmates — sometimes without family.   This is why Generation S.O.S has convened twice-monthly throughout the pandemic. Although we reach new members at every meeting, we need to reach the many other young adults and families struggling silently without the coping skills to safely navigate these tough times.
