I met Ploy on a lovely afternoon behind the restaurant at a table she had set up for me to sample a few dishes. She’s an amazing woman with a love for food and her culture, running a wonderful restaurant with her family. Ploy went to catering school. She grew up with authentic Thai food being prepared at home. \
What became Twist on Thai was taking the traditional foods and adding a twist. For example, Thai Tacos. It’s made of ground beef or tofu with Thai seasonings in a corn tortilla. The menu is eclectic and imaginative. Ploy’s father is the chef using only fresh ingredients which he has done all of Ploy’s life. “We enjoy cooking, we enjoy eating Thai cuisine. We know about Thai food. How to use the proper ingredients, the spices. The food is in our blood and we enjoy feeding people” stated Ploy.
Twist on Thai, a favorite independent restaurant in Hopatcong, N.J., was forced to close it’s doors earlier this year after 7 years in business. But Patcharin Davis, known to her friends as Ploy, the restaurant’s owner, wasn’t going to let the pandemic claim another casualty. With some quick thinking Ploy and her family were able to reopen with curbside pickup to keep their amazing Thai food available to our fortunate neighborhood.
I did get the opportunity to try some delicious treats crafted by Ploy’s father. First was steamed dumplings, hand wrapped wonton stuffed with seasoned ground pork, topped with golden fried garlic served with sweet soy sauce. So delicate and delicious. Next, I tried Koa Pad which is stir fried Jasmine white rice, with chicken, scrambled eggs, onion, scallions and tomatoes. The subtle flavors melded beautifully. Truth be told I have ordered from Twist on Thai before and had wonderful meals every time.
The restaurant has been, of course, effected by the pandemic as everyone has, but they are very conscious of the need for social distancing. We discussed whether she plans on opening the restaurant soon with a 25% capacity. Ploy feels very strongly about waiting to have the restaurant open again for inside seating until they feel it’s safe to do so. This is why Twist on Thai and Ploy are so focused on touchless and contactless curbside pick up.
So next time you are looking for something fresh and delicious to eat with a Thai flare that also helps keep our local businesses and families thriving during this difficult time, try Twist on Thai. And say hi to Ploy.
