Eric Fiorito from Hopatcong was sentenced on Friday for first-degree distribution of more than 5 pounds of hashish and third-degree distribution of more than 1 ounce but less than 5 pounds of marijuana.

According to reporting by the New Jersey Herald, Fiorito, who is eligible for parole release in roughly three years and three months, is a cancer patient and suffers from advanced diabetes and other health conditions, according to his attorney, Michael Krawitz. Krawitz said Fiorito was the first recipient in New Jersey to obtain a medical marijuana card due to his illnesses.

In a statement read to the court, Fiorito said he was “tired,” later stating he was “disgusted” and “ashamed” of what he did.

Fiorito’s son and wife received state offered pretrial intervention and community service as their sentences, as Fiorito “took responsibility entirety for what had transpired.”
