This summer there are several special events that are open to Seniors and Veterans in Hopatcong. Below is the information on how to make sure your included in these no-cost / low-cost events.

Celebrate Senior Day at the  New Jersey State Fair

The Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services is proud to present Senior Day at the New Jersey State Fair.  Join us under the Performing Arts Tent at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on Thursday, August 8, 2019, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., to participate in this special celebration.  This year’s program theme, “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” will showcase a disc jockey emceeing music from the 50s, 60s and 70s.   

All attendees will enjoy lively entertainment, light refreshments, door prizes, valuable information from vendors and promotional giveaways.  Each year a highlight of this event includes the announcement of the Sussex County Senior of the Year and recognition of all individuals who were nominated.  The Sussex County Skylands Ride “Bus Driver Safety Awards” will also be presented at the event.

Sussex County’s  7th Annual Veterans Picnic

The Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services, Municipal Alliance, and the Veterans Committee welcome veterans and their families to attend the 7th Annual Veterans Picnic.  This event will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019, from noon to 3:00 p.m., at the American Legion Post 213, located at 915 Route 23 (North), Sussex, NJ.  The picnic will include live music, giveaways, tables with veterans service information, and a homemade BBQ. 

Please note that food will be served between 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.    

Various service providers will be present to offer information and assistance regarding programs available to veterans and their families.  Agencies scheduled to participate in the picnic include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Sussex County Community College, Catholic Family and Community Services, Sussex County Division of Senior Services, Sussex County Municipal Alliance, and the Sussex County Mental Health Board.

Veterans Committee members would like veterans and their families to, “Share an afternoon with your fellow veterans with fine food and comradery.”  Pre-registration for this event is required by August 12, 2019.  For additional information and to RSVP for the picnic, please contact the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services at 973-5790555, ext.1221 or seniorservices@sussex.nj.us.


Sussex County Seeks Nominees for Senior of the Year

The Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services is in search of nominations for the “2019 Sussex County Senior of the Year.”   Do you know a Sussex County senior citizen who is a role model, who supports the community through volunteer efforts, supportive activities and advocacy on behalf of older adults and issues pertaining directly to them?   

Senior Day at the New Jersey State Fair will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., under the Performing Arts Tent.  The Award Ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m., and all nominees must be present.  Each nominee will be recognized at the Award Ceremony for their commitment to their community and to their peers.  Immediately following this segment of the ceremony, the Sussex County Senior of the Year will be named.

Hopatcong Seniors Trip

Will host a 5-day, 4-night trip to Vermont and New Hampshire from September 2 – 6, 2019.  The cost is $869 pp double occupancy and $1,008 single occupancy.
