Ms. Candace Kouris, Hopatcong 6th grade ELA teacher, Announces - Surprise Visit from Rob Buyea Author of "Because of Mr. Terupt."

On June 4, the 6th grade students were called to the library under the guise of an assembly with Mr. Benfatti. Mr. Benfatti finished his short speech and turned things over to Ms. Kouris, who read an excerpt from the novel, saving mr. terupt, the third book in the mr. terupt series written by Rob Buyea.

Because of Mr TeruptThe excerpt focused on a scene in which Mr Terupt talks about the fact that he loves surprises, particularly the kind that he knows about and gets to spring upon the unsuspecting. With that, Ms. Kouris called out to Mr. Buyea, who was secreted away in the back room of the library.

He emerged to cheers and shouts of joy emanating from the excited 6th graders. Having read the first book in the series, because of mr. terupt, for their summer reading assignment, the second book, mr. terupt falls again, in the fall, and the third book, saving mr. terupt, in the spring, the students were very well acquainted with each of the characters in the series and were already quite enamored with the author.

After Mr. Buyea gave a presentation about his writing process, the 6th grade students participated in a workshop facilitated by him. As the students wrote, Buyea walked around the room and read aloud excerpts from many of their pieces to highlight their accomplishments. The students were excited and eager to share their work with him and receive feedback.

Afterward, the students enthusiastically shared their reflections about this experience, overwhelmingly expressing enjoyment and appreciation.

More About Rob Buyea

While teaching elementary school I soon realized that in order to teach reading and writing, I needed to be a reader and writer first.  I began reading all sorts of wonderful books.  Then I began writing.

First, I wrote about our math classroom, the sorts of activities we were doing and problems we were investigating.  Then I began writing stories.  My students' stories were so impressive, I was inspired to write my own.  In the beginning, I wrote short ones, nothing too serious.  But then one afternoon I was struck by an idea that really excited me.  Soon after that I found a group of amazing writers to meet with.  I listened to them, and eventually shared my work.  Looking back, my writing was not very strong, but they liked my story, and they encouraged me to continue.  And so I did.  I made a large amount of progress on that manuscript before Mr. Terupt and his students told me to write about them first.  I hope to return to that original story one day.

Pay attention to the world around you, stories are everywhere.  And if you have a story, you have something to write about.

Overview of the Book: Because of Mr Terupt

It’s the start of fifth grade for seven kids at Snow Hill School. There’s . . . Jessica, the new girl, smart and perceptive, who’s having a hard time fitting in; Alexia, a bully, your friend one second, your enemy the next; Peter, class prankster and troublemaker; Luke, the brain; Danielle, who never stands up for herself; shy Anna, whose home situation makes her an outcast; and Jeffrey, who hates school.

Only Mr. Terupt, their new and energetic teacher, seems to know how to deal with them all. He makes the classroom a fun place, even if he doesn’t let them get away with much . . . until the snowy winter day when an accident changes everything—and everyone.
