Fourth grade students at Hopatcong Durban Avenue are finishing up their first Makerspace Lab module where they are using Legos to learn about gears, equivalent fractions, and writing.
As students build and observe a variety of gear meshings, they calculate gear ratios and extend those calculations into equivalent fractions. Once finished, they research where gears are used at home and in school, select one machine that uses gears, and write an informational paragraph which explains what the machine does, who uses it, and how the gears work to change speed, force, or direction.
The students at Durban Avenue School are enjoying this hands-on learning experience.
