The Durban Avenue School hosted its first ever Skype with an author!  Lauren Tarshis, author of the famous “I Survived” book series, Skyped with the entire student body on the afternoon of Friday, October 20th.

Ms. Tarshis is also the editor of Scholastic’s Storyworks Magazine and oversees language arts for the classroom magazine division of the company.  Ms. Tarshis Skype visits with schools around the country and we were lucky enough to be selected this year!

The author engaged the students through her unlikely journey from a struggling reader to a children’s book author.  Students generated questions for the author and presented them to her throughout the assembly.  Through these questions, the students learned about how she researches her books, the challenges she faces, how she develops her characters and plots, and how she writes draft after draft.

Ms. Tarshis’s objective was “to give students insight into the writing and research process, to arm them with the tools that will enhance their experience as readers and writers, and to inspire them to overcome obstacles –as she did—to achieve their highest goals.”
