While the day started out with a light drizzle, there was nothing but bright sunny skies at Opening Day for Hopatcong’s Little League teams.
Although Hopatcong Lake Regional News arrived 15 minutes after the event got underway, the crowd was already building with at least 300 kids, not including the parents and coaches. All were eagerly awaiting the first pitch that would signify the start the 2017 season.
This day, contrary to belief, was not the first time everyone had been together this season. In fact, these teams have been practicing indoors, and using batting cages to get ready for opening day, when Hopatcong deemed the fields to be ready, which occurred on April 17, 2017.
This year there are 16 teams that are proudly supported by several Hopatcong Businesses and Organizations (see listing at the bottom of the article.) Each team will play 2 games a week, with about three days of rest, for a total of 12 games during the regular season.
Opening Day - Means Hot Dogs!
Of course opening day means Hot Dogs, and this day was no exception. The hot dogs were provided courtesy of Sabretti's Hot Dogs and Wild Game Sausages which, in speaking to Mr. Rohan H. Shetty, “We expect to go through 420 hot dogs today before the opening pitch.”
In order to understand how these Hot Dogs were rated, we checked with the local consumers, and based upon this interview (pictured right) it obviously was a big hit!
Throwing the Opening Day Pitch
Opening Day’s most memorable moment is the first pitch. This year, it was thrown out by Kevin Giordano who throw and excellent first pitch, and was backed up by Mr. Shetty, a key sponsor of the entire Little League Program.
The Unsung Heroes – In Action
Every year there are countless people working behind the scenes to ensure a successful season. These hard workers are the main reason the community can enjoy a day like opening day, and they do all of this with little to no recognition. However, the Hopatcong Lake Regional News would like to recognize these people and their efforts. Thank you to all Coaches, Volunteers, Organizers, Parents, Grounds Personnel, as well as the supporting local Businesses, because without them events such as opening day would not be possible.
All Hopatcong Lake Regional News can say is... “Job well done on opening another successful season of America’s favorite pastime.”
