The RHS Band Parents Association to collect donations to be sent to the Rockport-Fulton, TX, HS Marching Pirates who Lost Everything in Harvey

The Roxbury Instrumental Music Department and The Roxbury Band Parents Association have become aware of Rockport-Fulton High School, in Rockport, TX which was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey. In personally speaking with band directors there, they confirmed the school band had lost all instruments, stands, music library, equipment and uniforms...EVERYTHING! Rockport-Fulton HS is closed indefinitely. The Rockport community was also ravaged by the hurricane and the majority of families’ homes have been destroyed. In addition to those in the region, and across the nation, doing what they can to help recent hurricane victims, Roxbury High School Bands and its supporters will join the cause.

On September 23, 2017, at The Roxbury Marching Band Classic, we will be collecting monetary donations for relief for the Rockport-Fulton Band Boosters Association. At the end of the evening, all the participating bands drum majors will be present on the field with a grand "collective" total check to be donated.

oxbury Marching Band Classic event Co Chair’s Beth Graf and Danielle Kovach stated “We know that the band community is second to none. Our hearts are big, we work hard and we love the music community. Our goal, as the RHSBPA, is to make a difference within the larger music community and teach our children that it is better to give than to receive.”

Below please find a flyer for distribution, as well as attached links below to an article and video of what one band did to make a difference. We have also included a :60 Radio PSA Script for use with Radio or Audio announcements for the fundraiser.

Roxbury Classic Background

Since its inception in 2009, the Roxbury Classic has distinguished itself as one of the premier high school marching band events in NJ. Most competitions are sponsored by one of the large regional marching band organizations which oversee promotional efforts, competing band recruitment and assembling the judging panel, among other things; but at a high cost. In 2012, the Roxbury Band Directors, together with the RHSBPA, made a cutting edge decision about the marching band program and took The Roxbury Classic in a new direction. They resolved to produce an event entirely independent of any umbrella agency. This allowed the Roxbury band program more flexibility with the number of bands they could accommodate in the competition as well as opened the way to attract higher caliber and more diverse adjudicators while continuing to run a professional, upbeat competition with an emphasis towards hospitality.

The two Roxbury High School host marching bands will participate as non-competing exhibition ensembles at this year's Roxbury Classic. The Marching Gaels consists of a highly dedicated group of students determined to present a top notch performance and compete in both local and regional marching band competitions. The award winning Roxbury Marching Gaels are proud to present their 2017 field show, “Ascend” featuring music by Anthony O'Toole, Eric Whitacre, David Beidenbender and Jay Bocook. The Gaels are proud to welcome Scott Slutter, music arrangements. and Bobby Jones, drill design, to their 2017 design team. Through exciting music, drill, and choreography as well as innovative use of props and electronics, the Gaels will explore a journey that takes the viewer through the sky and above the clouds.

The Marching Gaels is a symbol of pride and excellence for the school and community.

The Roxbury Sound was formed in 2012 to allow students to participate who were unable or did not wish to commit to the grueling schedule of the competition band. The Roxbury Sound performs a crowd pleasing, high-energy half-time show at all home football games and is a symbol of school spirit and entertainment for the school and community. Strengthening this atmosphere of unity, the Roxbury Sound plays the high school alma mater at the end of each home game, no matter the outcome, while the entire football team gathers by the bleachers in solidarity to salute their school.

As one of the Band Program's major fund-raisers, the Roxbury Classic provides necessary financial support for ALL high school band programs throughout the year for activities including the following:

  • Sponsoring visiting artist workshops, clinics and performances by professional soloists, conductors and composers
  • Purchasing new instruments and band equipment as well as maintaining current instrument inventory
  • Caring for Concert Band Attire and Marching Band Uniforms
  • Awarding scholarships to students continuing their music education
  • Support of special need students to provide every child an equal opportunity to pursue music as part of their high school education
  • Subsidizing student costs for special concerts and trips. Past performances include:
    • Honors Wind Symphony - National Concert Band Festival, Indianapolis, IN (2015) (2012)
    • Honors Wind Symphony - Lincoln Center, NYC (2014)
    • Symphony Band - Carnegie Hall, NYC (2013)
    • Marching Gaels - Regional Competition at Towson University, MD (2013)
    • Ninth Grade Concert Band - Commission and World Premiere; "Rhythmic Changes" by Bruce Yurko (2012)

The Roxbury Marching Gaels were 2015 US Bands Group IV Open State Champions, and one of five high school marching bands chosen to be featured in the 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show performance. In September 2013, Roxbury Township school district officially became an Inter-district School Choice district for its prestigious visual and performing arts program. Roxbury's instrumental music program was selected as the 2012 recipient of the Sudler Flag of Honor, an international award recognizing high school concert bands of outstanding musical excellence.
