Back again this year is the Dog Walk as part of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation Lake Loop 2017. And to find out more about the event, we spoke to the creator of this portion of the event, Jennifer DeWitt, who serves as the Development Director at the LHF.
So how did the dog walk get started? According to Jennifer, “As someone who is a lover of animals and has two dogs, a cat and 98 fish. I just thought what could be better than spending a day in the park with your favorite furry friend. So I pitched the idea and it was a huge success last year!”
The dog walk follows the same course as the Run/Walk, so if you do one lap you’ve done 1.5 miles, and if you do two laps, you’ve done a full 5k. “This event is very relaxed, you go at your own pace and do as many laps as you’d like. We do count the laps on the brag board for participants and their furry friends and the human/dog team that does the most loops wins a prize,” stated Jennifer.
Donations for Animal Shelters:
As part of the event, participants are encouraged to bring pet items such as food (wet and dry), new toys, blankets and anything else that a shelter may use. After the event, the donations will be given to a shelter around Lake Hopatcong.
The course is 100% in the park and includes everything that the park has to offer such walking past the monuments, buildings, and the dam. The terrain of the walk includes a little of everything on the trail, you have a little bit of pavement, a couple of hills, walking through grassy fields, and even a walk on the beach.
“We have made this event very animal-friendly and there are rest stops along the way with dog bowls filled with water and dog treats,” added Jennifer.
“And while it’s called a dog walk, we’re open to anything. I’m such an animal lover, I’d even allow someone to bring their elephant to the walk. They just need to be on a leash.”
