Back in April the Hopatcong Lake Regional News encouraged our readers to vote daily to help the Lake Hopatcong Foundation win a $50,000 grant from the USA Today Network. Thanks for all of your votes, because you helped make this a reality!
Now our Region will Benefit – Because of You!
The Lake Hopatcong Foundation will be looking for a 40-foot, custom-built, covered pontoon boat. The floating classroom will be used to help educate K-12 Kids from around the area. During these outings, the kids will learn about freshwater ecology, watershed protection and other topics related to the lake. As part of the program, they will collect water samples and conduct scientific tests.
The best way to ensure healthy lakes in the future is to educate people today. This floating classroom will bring hands-on lessons about fresh water ecology and watershed protection to life for thousands. Stocked with scientific equipment, students will engage in experiments which are an important component of the schools’ STEM program.
The Lake Hopatcong floating classroom will open eyes to new sights and open minds to new career opportunities. The success of the floating classroom will be measured by the sustained improvement in the understanding of key concepts, as well as positive feedback from students, teachers, and other groups on board. An expanded “footprint”– both geographically and amongst the varying age groups of students – would also be a sign of success for the program.
Thank you everyone for your votes! The staff at the Hopatcong Lake Regional News is proud to serve our community!
