With opposition to the nomination of Mike Pompeo as secretary of state growing in response to his history of anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant statements, Action Together New Jersey (ATNJ) has called on Bob Hugin, Republican Senate candidate from New Jersey, to denounce the nominee and distance himself from Pompeo’s bigoted rhetoric.

“In light of the recent nomination of Mike Pompeo to fill the position of Secretary of State, the people of this great state demand to know where Bob Hugin stands and whether or not he would vote to confirm Pompeo,” ATNJ said in a statement. “As our country’s chief diplomat, Mr. Pompeo would be required to work with Muslim leaders and communities here in New Jersey as well as abroad. However, Pompeo’s vitriolic rhetoric concerning Muslims, along with his close associations with a myriad of toxic anti-Muslim organizations, is of grave concern, and we, as constituents, deserve to know where Bob Hugin stands on this crucial nomination.”

A candidate seeking federal office, particularly a position as powerful as a United States senator, must demonstrate an ability and willingness to represent the interests of all constituents, according to ATNJ. “In the era of President Trump, Bob Hugin’s silence and complacency on the Pompeo nomination would show that he is complicit in the xenophobic and racist agenda that is currently being pushed by this president and his Republican colleagues,” the organization says. “The rhetoric expressed by Pompeo and silently accepted by Bob Hugin has no place in our senatorial delegation, and Bob Hugin must either disavow Pompeo or be complicit through his silence.”

ATNJ decided to issue this challenge to Hugin because “New Jersey voters want to know where the candidate stands in relation to the anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim extremism of the Trump administration,” said Uyen “Winn” Khuong, Executive Director of ATNJ. “New Jerseyans embrace the diversity and tolerance of our state, and we expect our elected representatives to do the same,” she added.
